People use "pergola" and "gazebo" interchangeably, then get two quotes thousands of dollars apart and wonder why. One detail separates them.
A pergola has an open roof — rafters with purlins across them. It filters sun and lets rain straight through.
A gazebo has a solid roof: sheathing, underlayment, then shingles or metal. It keeps rain off, so it has to be built like a small building.
Everything else follows from that — the framing, the foundation, the permit and the price.
A naming note, since it trips people up. A true gazebo is octagonal with a deck floor. The square, hip-roofed version most Bay Area yards get is technically a pavilion. Everyone calls it a gazebo, so we will too.
What it will not do is keep you dry. A louvered aluminum pergola closes to a watertight roof, at a real jump in cost.
This is where a gazebo stops being a bigger pergola.
A hip roof means hip rafters running to each corner and jack rafters filling between them, every cut a compound angle. It is harder than deck framing, and it is where most DIY gazebo builds stall.
Then it has to work as a roof: sheathing, underlayment, shingles or metal, hip caps down every hip, flashing and drip edge. Plus bigger posts, beams and footings to carry the weight and the wind.
None of that exists on a pergola. That is the price gap.
Skip the styling question. Ask what you want to do out there when the weather is not perfect.
Two notes. A solid roof over a west-facing patio does far more for summer afternoons than a pergola will. And anything electrical out there wants a roof over it.

Budget for the surprises too — foundation work on sloping ground, permit and plan fees, and electrical if you want the space usable after dark.

A knee brace set at roughly 45 degrees turns each corner into a triangle and carries lateral force down the post into the footing. They belong at all four corners — they are structure, not decoration, and leaving them off is a common reason a pergola starts to lean.
Yes, and it is common — but attaching changes the project. It needs a permit regardless of size, because the connection affects the house's structure. It has to tie into framing rather than fascia or eaves, and it has to be flashed where the two roofs meet, or you have built a leak.
